Jean Cocteau e il Trinity

Jean Cocteau and the Trinity

The Trinity by Cartier

"I gave it to Jean and said, first one is me, the second one is you, the third is our love"
"I gave it to Jean and said, the first is me, the second is you, the third is our love."

Let's continue talking about Cartier, which has got many things right in the history of iconic jewelry.

You know the Trinity, or rather what is called Trinity today, 3 rings of white, yellow and rose gold crossed in a single ring.

It's 1924, in Paris, at the head of the Maison is Louis Cartier, grandson of the historic founder, Louis is a friend of Jean Cocteau, an incredible and rebellious artist, novelist, poet, designer and director.

Legend has it that one evening Cocteau, lost in the fumes of opium, was fascinated by the vision of Saturn's rings and asked his friend Louis to transform such a universal concept into something small and personal.

The Trinity, then called the three-ring, together with a bracelet of the same model, debuted at the 1925 World's Fair, alongside the opulent and colorful jewels of the time.

In the same year it appeared in American Vogue and quickly became a cult ring.

Cocteau wore two on his little finger like the Duke of Windsor, but also Gary Cooper and Cary Grant. The Trinity is first and foremost a men's ring.

Jacques Cocteau told an intrigued Alain Delon: "I gave it to Jean Marais (his life and work partner) and said, the first is me, the second is you, the third is our love".

In 1950, a Trinity also appears on Delon's finger.

Three bands of platinum, yellow gold and rose gold welded together to create a continuous movement, they call it #therollingring
"the jeweler was a discreet magician who captures fragments of the moon on a thread of the sun" said Cocteau of Louis Cartier.
Later in 1955 they will collaborate again to create a sword, which Jean Cocteau will wear to enter the "immortelles" of the members of the Académie Française.
